all things nashville startups
hi friends,
Since last week was a holiday, this newsletter is a bit different. That being said, a lot happened still!!
Made angel investment #13 last week. They’re still stealthy, but excited to share about it when the time is right (:
I’m in the middle of doing my first SPV. Feels like I’m building the ship while flying it with this one!!! But I’m learning so much about how I can be better and do more (and will def make a bunch of content about it haha). Learning lessons so far:
1) People really, really want access to solid, vetted deals and they want the ability to write small checks (as opposed to a typical 50k minimum)
2) I need to make myself more scalable so I don’t spend all my time repeating the same information
3) There’s a lot of different parties that must come together to do a deal, the lead venture fund, the founding team, legal teams, spv investors, etc. I can only control my own timeline!
4) Sydecar makes things really, really easy as a software (not an ad, genuinely impressed lol)
Finally received a lease for office space!!! If you’ve been reading my updates, you might know that I had a space fall through this summer, then spent a couple months looking for a sweetheart deal, then realized that I didn’t want to have a funky situation that could be made to work and that I needed to bite the bullet and do the damn thing for real, so I started looking at leasing commercial space, was frustrated with the process, but now am in the FINAL stages of lease negotiation. As soon as the ink is dry, I will share where and what is to come!!!! All I know, I’ve got a lot of work to do over the next few months… haha. Luckily doing the work is the fun part!
This newsletter crossed 2,000 people. Sweet.
Events:
I’m hosting a workshop about how to get started as an angel investor on Tuesday, Jan 14th. Teaming up with my friends and the people I rely on for their expertise- Peter at Gust and Tommy at Riverfront Advisors. Link to sign up is here.
Personal stuff:
While the majority of my Brazil trip was work, me and Mr Zap spent our Thanksgiving at a jungle lodge in the Amazon Rainforest!!! To get there- a car ride, a boat ride, another car ride (this time dirt roads for an hour), and then another boat ride to a lodge only accessible by river.
We got to do really cool things like see monkeys in the trees, feed giant fish, swim with pink dolphins, fish for piranhas, go caimen hunting in the dark, and eat the edible parts of the rainforest.
The best part of travel- the perspective it gives me. We were the only guests of the family who had lived in the Amazon for generations. They do not care about my newsletter, my SPV, my work problems, etc. They care about who I am and how I treat people.
And it’s a reminder that my life is inside a tiny bubble. The world is vast and my problems are small. Things that can stress me out- which software to use, catching up on all my emails, figuring out how to word an email professionally- at the end of the day, they don’t really matter.
to the moon,
zap
